American Chronicles: The Art of Norman Rockwell

November 12 2011 - February 5 2012
American Chronicles: The Art of Norman Rockwell
Organized by the Norman Rockwell Museum, located in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, American Chronicles features original art from the museum’s noted collections. The exhibition chronicles Rockwell’s life and art, introducing new scholarship rooted in decades of study by Curator of Norman Rockwell Collections, Linda Pero. The artist’s paintings, drawings, and studies span 56 years, from his 1914 interpretation of American folk hero Daniel Boone securing safe passage for settlers to the American West, to his 1970 report on American tourists and armed Israeli soldiers witnessing a Christmas Eve ceremony at the Basilica of the Nativity in Bethlehem. The exhibition invites viewers to compare their own 20th-century American experience with the events portrayed by Rockwell, and to consider how much Rockwell’s vision may have influenced theirs.
American Chronicles: The Art of Norman Rockwell traces the evolution of Rockwell’s art and iconography throughout his career – from carefully choreographed reflections on childhood innocence in such paintings as Day in the Life of a Little Girl (1952) to powerful, consciousness-raising images for Lookin the 1960s documenting the traumatic realities of desegregation in the South. Rockwell’s artistic contributions and the impact of his images on American popular culture are explored within the context of his life and times, through in-depth exhibition commentary and a decade-by-decade installation of 42 original artworks, as well as a complete set of 323 Saturday Evening Post cover tear sheets spanning 47 years.

Joyce Phillips Young

Joyce Phillips Young
Joyce received the President's Award at the 2010 Middletown Arts Center Area Art Show. Her paintings are currently on display in our newly renovated lobby. Stop by today to see her breathtaking works of art!

About the Artist

Joyce Phillips Young grew up in the village of Yellow Springs, Ohio - a small, rural, progressive, college  town with a rich cultural heritage.  Her father was a Baptist Minister, carpenter and artisan.  Her mother was an elementary school teacher and also worked at the Antioch College Library in Yellow Springs. Her early childhood experiences, training in music and exposure to various working artists and Shakespearean Theater helped to spark and nurture her interest in the arts.

The artist attended Miami University in OxfordOhio where she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Design and a Masters of Education Degree in Art Education.  She has also studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy and the University of Cincinnati.  Ms. Young worked as an art teacher, elementary administrator and also served as the K-l2 Supervisor of Art for the Cincinnati Public Schools for several years.  She has also taught African-American Art History at the University of Cincinnati.  She has received much public recognition and numerous awards and commissions for her work as a painter, muralist, arts educator and arts advocate.  She was also featured in an Ebony Magazine article in 1982 for her work in creating urban murals. The artist has exhibited in numerous group, individual and invitational exhibitions locally, nationally and in the Caribbean.  Her work is in many private and corporate collections.

Since retiring from the Cincinnati Public Schools in 1997 Joyce has been a practicing professional artist and art consultant. Joyce has her own studio which
is located in the loft area of her home.

The artist has this to say about her art:

"My involvement with drawing and painting embodies my intention to celebrate life by creating and communicating positive images which convey the human qualities of love, creative mind, feeling, order and truth.  Each and every moment of life is a wondrous gift and is for each person a unique journey toward an unfolding of one's own understanding, consciousness and creativity.  During this process I have come to know that life through its myriad of experiences and challenges teaches us many lessons to guide us along the way.  My work reflects my own journey.  The human figure is the major paradigm in my art and I am continuously inspired and challenged by its spirit and form. Painting and the creative process are for me a metaphor for life - filled with so many opportunities for discovery and learning.

I find much enjoyment in working with warm, happy colors, lost and found edges, contrast and similarities, realism and abstraction, and playing with moving and interconnecting lines and shapes. These lines and shapes interconnect and overlap with each other to make a visual statement about the impermanent, ever changing, layered, illusionary and spiritual quality of our existence.  I delight in providing the viewer with new and different ways of seeing and interpreting the visual environment. It is my desire that people who interact with and respond to my art are inspired visually, mentally and spiritually."

Family Friendly Cincinnati

Enjoy this blog posting via Family Friendly Cincinnati. Thanks for attending CACD 2011 and spreading the word about the Middletown Arts Center!
Alright, I’ll admit it, until recently I had no idea the city I live in had an arts center.  Imagine my surprise when I find out we have not just one, but two great art centers in Middletown!
After finding out about the two places I made a plan to take Courtney for a visit.  We went to the Middletown Arts Center for the Community Arts Day.  What a great day to go and we had a fun time!  While there, I ask loads of questions about MAC.  I found out that they offer classes for all skill levels and age levels.  Audrey was most enthusiastic about this!  She loves creating, so classes are the next step in her creative process.
We really enjoyed the “Reflections” works by Linda Kay Fisher in the exhibition hall.  Audrey and I are also looking forward to visiting the MAC on September 23 for their area art show.  I’m personally looking forward to seeing all the local artists creations.
The MAC is open Mondays – Thursdays beginning at 9 A.M. and is located on Verity Parkway in downtown Middletown.  If you’re looking for a class or to just look around, check out their website or call 513-424-2417
I mentioned above that there are actually two art centers in Middletown.  Pendleton Art Center is new to our community having just opened up earlier this year.  I will be honest here and let you know that I haven’t visited yet, but I do plan on attending one of the First Fridays or Second Look Saturdays.  If you’re interested in visiting the Pendleton Art Center, check out their website for all the First Friday and Second Look Saturday dates and times!

The Learning Place

Discover the Middletown Arts Center

The Middletown Arts Center was founded in 1957, with the mission to enrich the community by creating opportunities for artistic expression through learning and appreciation. The Middletown Arts Center continues fulfill that mission by offering an average of 160-175 classes offered during the year, to students ages kindergarten to 90+ in all levels of experience. Talented visual artists, who offer knowledge and experience in their respective medium, teach MAC classes. Students can learn techniques in such mediums as glass fusing, enameling, ceramics, acrylic, oil, and watercolor painting, and digital photography. Please visit our website www.middletownartscenter.com for complete course listings.

The Middletown Arts Center is the proud sponsor of two art competitions for area youth. In collaboration with Artswave, “Tomorrow’s Artist Today” is visual art competition for youth, ages 13-18, in a 50-mile radius of Middletown that awards prize money to winning pieces. The “TAT” competition encourages student artists to present their artwork in a professional manner and asks students to play an active role in the process of entering. The Scholarship Competition awards area elementary, middle, and high school students scholarships to MAC classes. Student entries are selected and chosen artists are asked to return and compete for a second time at the MAC.

The MAC is home to a newly renovated exhibit hall that showcases artwork from local and national artists. The exhibition hall is open to the public Monday –Thursday during MAC business hours and Saturday mornings.
