Creating the New Century, a special exhibition organized by The Dayton Art Institute, features 70 paintings, drawings, and sculptures - all created since the year 2000 - from the Dicke collection.  Sixty-nine artists are represented by works that document the range of styles and technical concerns, as well as social and political issues, that engage artists in the 21st century. 

While many works are by well-known painters and sculptors who have participated in museum and gallery exhibitions and received reviews in arts periodicals, others are less well known in a selection characterized by the curiosity and tastes of the collector. 

Creating the New Century offers an opportunity to explore aspects of contemporary art practice firsthand and presents the accomplishments of a number of artists whose work has not previously been exhibited in Southwest Ohio.

It was a 20 cubic foot gas kiln that snared me--one that was approaching 2000 degrees Fahrenheit. It was in September 1997 when I rounded the corner of the darkened kiln room. I realized also that the low rumbling I had heard all morning came from that kiln.

There on the floor I saw Will, my first ceramic instructor, on his knees in front of the kiln, peering into one of its flaming peep holes with welders goggles. I found the site to be too much. I turned and scuttled back to my disappointing first pinch pots.

It was from that moment I was hooked. I spent all free time in that studio working the clay and learning about glazes and firing as much as allowed. I returned to school to earn my second Bachelors--fine arts ceramic studio. I am also pleased to say you can now find me on my knees in front of similar excited and flaming kilns.

Exhibition at Antioch College Explores Mathematics through the Arts

YELLOW SPRINGS, Ohio – May 11, 2011 – Antioch College will host the Midwest premiere of an exhibition that explores the intersections between mathematics and a wide range of artistic mediums from May 18 to November 1 in Herndon Gallery on the campus in Yellow Springs, 1 Morgan PL, Yellow Springs, OH 45387. Gallery hours are 1:00-4:00 p.m., Tuesdays through Sunday. An opening reception will be held at 6:00 p.m., Saturday, May 21.

Alumnus John Sims ’90 created Rhythm of Structure: Bowery and Beyond/Mathematics, Art and Poetic Reflection from a yearlong series of shows that premiered at the Bowery Poetry Club in New York City in 2009. It features major contemporary artists Sol LeWitt, Karen Finley, DJ Spooky, Dread Scott, Ken Hiratsuka, John Sims, Paulus Gerdes, John Hiigli, Vandorn Hinnant and many others.

More than thirty-five poets who participated in the exhibition are also featured in the documentary film accompanying the show, including alumnus Mark Strand ‘57, former Poet Laureate of the United States.

"We are excited to be hosting John Sim's cutting edge exhibition out of New York City at the Herndon Gallery," said Anne Bohlen, Arthur E. Morgan Fellow and program organizer. "We are looking forward to creating community involvement in the evolving MathematicalGraffitiWall and other exhibition performance events that we will be organizing in the next six months."

Numerous Miami Valley visual artists, poets, dancers, musicians, community members and students will be invited to investigate and celebrate the overlapping territories of mathematics and art through both the MathematicalGraffitiWall and performance events.

The exhibition’s arrival in Yellow Springs is timed partly to coincide with the College’s 2011 Alumni Reunion weekend, which has as its theme “Science & Invention.” Nobel Laureate and Antioch alumnus Mario Capecchi '61 graduate of the College, will celebrate the 50th anniversary of his graduation from the College and deliver the keynote address.

Stuck at Prom® is an online contest that challenges students to create and accessorize their prom outfits with duct tape for the chance to win scholarship money.


Every contestant is responsible to supply the duct tape needed to create their outfits. This applies to both individuals and schools.


First Place: $5,000 each.
Second Place: $3,000 each.
Third Place: $2,000 each.
The seven remaining "runners up" couples will each receive $500.

The Dougherty Exhibit at Wegerzyn Gardens in Dayton

Acclaimed "woven wood" artist Patrick Dougherty has installed a one-of-a-kind outdoor sculpture at Wegerzyn Gardens MetroPark.  With more than 1000 hours of help from local volunteers--as well as the expert assistance of Five Rivers MetroParks personnel--Dougherty created a 191-foot-long tunnel that coils sinuously around Wegerzyn's North Plaza.  Woven entirely of willow branches that were crowding the fishing lakes at Englewood MetroPark, the sculpture has windows, doors and openings that invite the visitor to peer into and out of its rustic interior. Dubbed "Wiggle in Its Walk," our serpentine sculpture is quite distinctive from Dougherty's past creations, which are reminiscent of nests, lairs, vessels, and mythic shelters. He took full advantage of the North Plaza's central location, clear visibility from four directions, strong geometric presence, and proximity to the Children's Discovery Garden.  The sculpture is expected to remain standing for approximately two years, after which the material will be transferred to Wegerzyn’s composting facility.  The sculpture and its associated Branching Out programs will be used to narrow the widening gap between the “plugged-in generation” and the natural environments by encouraging children to explore and appreciate the natural world and to recognize the need to preserve it. The exhibit will also broaden Wegerzyn’s membership and visitor base through outreach and collaboration with other local organizations, by offering high-quality, compelling experiences with nature and art.
